2015-2016 Annual Report to AALL
SANDALL completed its 18th year in July 2016 and offered 10 member events. The 2016 Winter Institute, “Digital Archives: Best Practices for Preserving Organizational Memory,” was attended by library and archives professionals from Southern California libraries, museums and historical societies. It included a visit from John Adkins, AALL Executive Board Member.
The Archives Committee continued investigation of policies and processes involving print and digital materials. The committee drafted an archives policy, which the board approved. The Winter Institute provided an opportunity to discuss the policy draft with colleagues prior to finalizing it. Based on an informal survey, SANDALL is leading the way for AALL chapters to create and maintain digital archives.
The mentorship program continued with monthly breakfast meetings for members and students to network and socialize. The name changed from SANDALL Buddies to SANDALL Connect, which was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. The new name better describes the program’s purpose of facilitating connections between professionals from various types of law libraries and reflects the changing nature of how we connect as professionals.
The Board conducted a membership survey and shared results with an eye toward improving practices to better meet members’ needs. The Employment Committee continues to produce a weekly email of current job listings from law libraries across the country. This comprehensive list is distributed by other AALL chapters. The Social Responsibility Committee organized its first volunteer effort with Stand Down San Diego, an annual event offering services to homeless veterans.
The Government Relations Committee worked with NOCALL and SCALL to submit a joint letter of support for California Senate Bill 711. The committee continues to work with California chapters to create a streamlined process for securing joint letters on future advocacy issues.
SANDALL provided grants to two members, including one for the AALL 2016 Annual Meeting. SANDALL Bylaws were updated to provide clarity on board election policies and to be consistent with the AALL Bylaws anti-discrimination clause. AALL Bylaws & Resolutions Committee approved the changes.
Tours of the Museum of Photographic Arts Library and the San Diego History Center were well attended. SANDALL offered networking and social events with SLA-San Diego. The annual December holiday party with children’s book drive was held at 98 Bottles in San Diego. The annual Spring Social and fund-raising raffle was held in May at Mission Bay Park.

At the June Business Meeting, SANDALL welcomed new members and officers and gave thanks to dedicated members for their service: Anna Russell, Ian Kipnes, Phyllis Marion, Michele Jones and Suzanne Smith. Betsy Chessler received the Newsletter Article of the Year Award for her March 2016 submission about the SANDALL 2016 Winter Institute.
