2013-2014 Annual Report to AALL
SANDALL completed its 15th year in July of 2014. During the year we had a total of 11 programs including a fall workshop. Our fall workshop entitled “Technology for Disintermediated Learning” included a visit from Katie Brown of the AALL Executive Board who participated and presented.
SANDALL was a sponsor of the San Diego Law Library’s “ Legal Futures Summit 2.0” which brought together members of the legal community from attorneys, professors, judges and librarians to brainstorm ways in which legal help services can be connected to law students and lawyers for practical training and professional development. SANDALL also co-sponsored with the San Diego County Bar Association, a program from the Internet for Lawyers team of Carole Levitt and Mark Rosch, authors of The Cybersleuth’s Guide to the Internet.
Two of the more popular events this year were tours of San Diego’s new Central Public Library in October 2013, and the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Courthouse Annex in March 2014. Other meetings included a panel of librarians from various types of libraries on the topic of “Coping with Budget Constraints”, and brown bags on “Social Media Knowledge Management”, “Resolving Disputes”, “Military Law and Libraries”.
Members enjoyed social events including a downtown happy hour after the September brown bag, and December’s holiday party, held once again at the Inn at the Park in Banker’s Hill. Our Spring Social was hosted in May by Past President Brent Bernau at his recently remodeled home overlooking the ocean. A fund raising raffle for SANDALL was held at this event.
Membership and program fees as well as grants
from vendors kept our finances stable during the year. We were able to provide three grants to
members this year: one for participation in the Northwest
Interlibrary Loan and Resource Sharing Conference and two for the 2014 AALL
Annual Meeting in San Antonio.
At our Annual Business Meeting in June, Amy Moberly was given the Chapter’s June F. MacLeod Outstanding Service Award for her 13 years of service as the editor of the SANDALL News. All committee chairs were given certificates of appreciation as well as outgoing SANDALL Historian Leigh Inman. Newsletter article of the year awards were given to Betsy Chessler for her article The State of Competitive Intelligence: Notes from the SLA 2013, Vol. 16(1), as well as Jan Hedlun and Kitty Brlej for their article SANDALL Visits the New Federal Courthouse, Vol. 16(5).
SANDALL hosted the Pacific Chapters reception during the Annual Meeting in San Antonio this year. The reception was held at Pat O’Brien’s and approximately 75 members of the various West Coast chapters attended.
The Board began to look into the whether or not SANDALL should incorporate as a 501c organization in 2013-2014. We will continue gathering information and hope to make a decision on this issue in the upcoming year.
Our board experienced some changes this year due to the new job and related out of town move of Vice-President/President Elect Shannon Malcolm in December 2013. Secretary Anna Russell was appointed to serve the remainder of Shannon’s term, and member Michele Knapp agreed to act as secretary for the remainder of the year. Our annual election in May produced a new group of officers, listed below.
SANDALL Officers 2013-2014: Barbara Glennan, President; Anna Russell, Vice President; Michele Knapp, Secretary; Robert Wickman, Treasurer, and Brent Bernau, Past President
SANDALL Officers 2014-2015: Anna Russell, President; Michele Knapp, Vice President/President-Elect; Ian Kipnes, Secretary; Robert Wickman, Treasurer; Barbara Glennan, Past President
I’d like to thank the 2013-2014 Board members for their dedicated work and guidance during my term as President. I enthusiastically welcome the members of the 2014-2015 Board and look forward to working with them for another year of supporting our profession and colleagues in San Diego Area Law Libraries.
