Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the current “hot topic” in library technical services, and the discussions surrounding it are controversial and continuing.  Many questions are being raised:  How will it impact our current catalog databases?  How expensive will it be to implement?  How different is it from AACR2?  Is this the right direction for the profession to move in at this time?

Linda Barnhart, Head of the Metadata Services Department at the University of California, San Diego Libraries will attempt to answer these and other questions in the informal presentation “RDA in One Hour or Less.”   This will be an introduction to RDA for both public and technical services librarians.  She will relate a brief history and description of RDA, talk briefly about the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and why it is important, describe the planning for RDA implementation and training, and talk about the potential impact of RDA on the future of MARC.  This will not be detailed RDA training for catalogers. While acronyms will undoubtedly be used, understanding MARC tags or AACR2 rule numbers is not needed in order to attend.

Directions & Parking

Stop at the guard house and indicate that you’re attending a meeting at the LRC and you need a guest parking pass. Go straight through the intersection and make a right into the parking lot. Turn left to descend to more levels of underground parking. Park in any spot that doesn’t say Reserved. The school is on Spring Break, so parking should be plentiful.

As you emerge from the parking garage, face West (with the guard house to your left) and the Legal Research Center will be the second building on the left. Enter the building and Room 132 will be on the left.

Hope to see you there!
